7 March - Drawing crowds

Reading:
Mark 1

The first chapter of Mark gives a punchy rendering of how Jesus launched his public ministry. Baptism, solitude and temptation, calling the first disciples, and then heading off into ministry sunset. No more easy solitude from then on. Whatever he does draws crowds, entire towns in fact and even districts. So whatever it was that Jesus did (healing, exorcising, teaching with authority) obviously worked for first century Middle Easterners. (Mark prudently leaves out the bit about turning water into wine, which may or may not have drawn its own bit of crowd).

So as far as launching a new ministry goes, Jesus seemed to have it down to a tee. His responses are a bit baffling though. I'm not sure what he saw that we don't, but Jesus didn't sign them up for discipleship courses. No. Jesus fled. (got that..?) Is it just me, or does that seem a bit counterintuitive for someone set on starting a new world wide religion?
